UPDATE! 2010 FACUG Technology Cruise next
February!

BarCampTampaBay 2009, Sep 26 & 27, 9am - 4pm
Something exciting will be happening on Saturday & Sunday, Sep 26th &
27th in Tampa (and it's FREE!).
A BarCamp is a
relatively new concept. Computer and Technology enthusiasts will
congregate to enjoy a wide variety of seminars on those 2 days.
The agenda is created on-site at the start of each day. Sessions
range from 10 minutes to 2.5 hours (most are about 45 minutes each).
Since 4 sessions will occur simultaneously, you can almost always find
something you're interested in.
A small sample of topics from last year include: mobile apps, iPhone
apps, Adobe AIR, voice apps, project management, Twitter, etc.
These are the type of devices and applications that will occur on
Saturday.
Sunday will be New Media day. Presentation
last year centered on Twitter, Blogging, Rich Internet Apps, social
media, podcasting, Internet Video, SEO, mobile marketing, RSS, and VoIP.
The event will again take place at the USF School of Business.
I plan attending this one on both days. (I postponed my vacation
so that I could be there. This will be a lot of learning, and you
can't beat the price - did I already mention that it's free?
Here's where to go for more info:

Toastmasters Open House this Thursday in Palm Harbor 7-8:30pm
Would you like to overcome your fear of public speaking? Would you
like to improve your abilities to speak to groups. I'm a firm
believer in Toastmasters. They have the best curriculum around to
help you improve your speaking skills imho. My Palm Harbor group
is going to have an Open House this coming Thursday night (Sep. 17th),
and everyone is invited. We meet at the Palm Harbor Parks and
Recreation Building on 1500 16th St. We'll have a great time, and
we'll feed you that night (including some award-winning salsa from one
of our members - this stuff is so hot that he has to keep it in a bowl
made out of space shuttle tiles).

Our
Random Acts of Kindness day was last Friday
We had a wonderful day. We worked on over a dozen
computers, showed a bunch of movies, and ate a ton of food. I
don't have the time to recognize all of the people who contributed to
this event. You were all wonderful, and we appreciate it -- even
though I'm going to show a lack of couth by not taking the time to list
all of your names. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
-----
Do you have questions about technology?
Several people have
requested a place to ask their computer, Internet, etc. questions.
We have created an email list to help you do just that. If you
subscribe to the list, you will receive roughly 2 to 6 emails a day of
technology questions and answers. Oops! This has rapidly
become very popular. Now we're getting 10 to 15 emails each day.
We have attracted some
skilled technical contributors. We also encourage the
participation of the talented people in our community who can be of help
to the less skilled among us. If you would like to sample some
tech community spirit, just send an email to:
Moderator @ SWFPCSupport.com
with the word "subscribe" in the Subject line. Don't worry, you can remove yourself at any time.

UPDATE! 2010 FACUG Technology Cruise
next February!
As of October 22nd, the cruise line may recall all of
FACUG's unbooked cabins in order to sell them to the public at a much
higher price. If you have been considering going, now is the time
to take action.
The Florida Association of Computer User Groups (FACUG)
is going to hold their next spring conference aboard the Norwegian Sky
cruise ship. We will sail from Miami on Friday, February 26, 2010.
We'll be calling on Nassau and Great Stirrup Cay, Bahamas, and we'll
return to Miami on Monday, March 1, 2010.
The cruise prices are wonderful: $233.37 per passenger
including taxes, fees, and gratuities (in the cheapest cabins), and the
conference is only $50 for TBCS members and their spouses. We'll
have presentations, programs, vendors, cruise adventure, and fantastic
food and activities. Please go to:
www.facug.org for details and
registration. We also have a wiki that you may use to get more
details, and to meet up with other Cruisers:

Our SIGs (Special
Interest Groups)
all meet at our Resource Center
(map:
http://www.tampa-bay.org/maps.htm).
All of our SIGs are free to our members.
SIGs are a great place to get more personalized attention, and get your
questions answered. The following SIGs will meet this week:

Led by Roger Leer
Roger, as always, has an aggressive and eclectic agenda. Come on out
and enjoy.
Monday, September 14, 7-9pm
Photoshop SIG. Led by Stan Ashbrook
We値l talk about color management so that you can see how to get prints
from your printer that look like your monitor. Next we値l talk
about Metadata, what it is, where it comes from, how to edit it and how
to use it. We値l compare digital asset management (storing and
finding your photos) in Windows, Photoshop Bridge, and Lightroom.
Finally, we値l do some image adjustments and compare using Photoshop and
Lightroom to do these adjustments. You are urged to bring an image
that you would like some help with in any way. I would like to do
more of this, i.e. working on images from the group as a group.
Should be a fun 2 hours.
Stan
