1) General Interest

Ahhh Technology...
The gods of technology did not shine down on me last week.  I published and mailed the Bulletin last Monday.  For some unknown reason, it was not mailed out until Friday morning.  Also on Friday morning, I tried to broadcast Doc's Place via Microsoft's Live Meeting.  We established the video feed, but were unable to get the audio to work.  While online broadcasting has caused me to have egg on my face so often as of late, we ARE going to make this work.  If nothing else, once I have eliminated ALL of the things that keep it from working, I'm hoping that all of the correct solutions will be left.

-----

Our mailing list has gone over 1,500 members!
While we never manually remove someone from the list - UNLESS they request it, we do lose members when they change their address or let their mailboxes overflow.  We also appreciate people who forward the Bulletin on to their friends and groups they belong to.  Yesterday, I added in about a dozen messages that I had missed.  If we have already unsubscribed you, and all of a sudden you are back on the list, I probably did that.  Please just send a message to the Club Secretary, and I'll remove you.

-----

Do you have questions about technology?
Several people have requested a place to ask their computer, Internet, etc. questions.  We have created an email list to help you do just that.  If you subscribe to the list, you will receive roughly 2 to 6 emails a day of technology questions and answers.

We have attracted some skilled technical contributors.  We also encourage the participation of the talented people in our community who can be of help to the less skilled among us.  If you would like to sample some tech community spirit, just send an email to:
Moderator @ SWFPCSupport.com with the word "subscribe" in the Subject line.  Don't worry, you can remove yourself at any time.

-----

A Special Invitation...
Normally, I don't bother posting my speaking engagements to the club.  However, I'm especially proud of one that will take place this coming Saturday, September 4th, 2-4pm, at the Clearwater East Library on 2251 Drew St.  The title of the speech is "Living In A Connected World".  While I have delivered pieces of the speech in a variety of venues, this is the first time that I have stitched them all together into a single speech.  I will show some video, discuss our connectedness, and address the tools that we are using to form global communities.  The speech is hosted by the Suncoast Humanist Society.  Attendance is free, and it's open to everyone.  Please feel free to join us.

Our Random Acts of Kindness day on Friday, September 11th

We are opening up our clinic on that day to NON-TBCS members.  If you know someone who needs help with their computer, please encourage them to register and then bring it in.  The registration page, and other items are viewable at our wiki:
http://computer-raok.wikispaces.com

We have flyers for this event at the Resource Center.  If you take one, please post it on a community bulletin board... don't just stuff it in your pocket.

We are interested in donuts, cookies, and fruit early followed by salads, sandwiches, cakes, and casseroles later.  I'm told that if it comes under the general heading of "Food", that we will accept it.  Those who still have their sanity when it comes to food will be in charge.  They don't permit ME to make any decisions in this area.  They showed me a healthy veggie plate one day and had the nerve to refer to it as "Food".  I told them, "That's not Food.  That's what Food eats!"  <grin>

We will supply the sodas and coffee throughout the day.  But if you will help supply any of the above, please send an email to the Club Secretary.

2010 FACUG Technology Cruise/Conference next February!
The Florida Association of Computer User Groups (FACUG) is going to hold their next spring conference aboard the Norwegian Sky cruise ship.  We will sail from Miami on Friday, February 26, 2010.  We'll be calling on Nassau and Great Stirrup Cay, Bahamas, and we'll return to Miami on Monday, March 1, 2010.

The cruise prices are wonderful: $233.37 per passenger including taxes, fees, and gratuities (in the cheapest cabins), and the conference is only $50 for TBCS members and their spouses.  We'll have presentations, programs, vendors, cruise adventure, and fantastic food and activities.  Please go to:
www.facug.org for details and registration.  We also have a wiki that you may use to get more details, and to meet up with other Cruisers:
http://facug-cruise.wikispaces.com/

While VB is not going away, some popular technologies to be added are PHP, MySQL, JQuery, CSS, JavaScript, and much more.  We'll be working on and with development environments like web servers running on Windows (IIS or WAMP) or Linux (LAMP)

You might be familiar with some of these, some not. This is your opportunity to build additional talents.  Tom encourages all levels of competency to attend.  And if you're a wizard... come share your knowledge!
