1) General Interest

Welcome back Charles Oppermann!
I'm so pleased to have my friend and computer mentor return to this area.  Chuck and I co-hosted a local cable TV show years ago called: "Computer Chat".  In 1989, we won a local award for "Best Educational Show", and we came in fourth in that category in a national competition.

Chuck has left Microsoft and returned to the area.  He has been a supporter of TBCS for many years, and many of our members will turn up for his informative sessions.  I'm very pleased to announce that he will frequently be joining us at our events: he will be joining me at Doc's Place on Friday mornings, he'll be with us this coming Friday night at the 2600 Club (see below), and he'll be with Cathy Benedict and myself tonight at the Q&A SIG.

====

Live Broadcasting continues to be a problem at times... especially for Doc's Place on Friday mornings.  I'm sorry for your frustration, but I'm determined that we will solve this problem.

====

I have a guest SEO speaker, Steve Scott, coming to TBCS for the New Media SIG.  Join us next Saturday afternoon (2-4pm) for his SEO event (details under SIG Stuff below).

====

The Soda Fund is now losing almost $40 a month.  If we can't break even, then we'll have to take steps.  We provide coffee for free.  We charge only 50 cents for sodas or water.  Obviously, a lot of people are freeloading.  It's got to come to a halt.  This is the last warning.

Would YOU like to have a money-making website?
TBCS member, June Hollister, teaches a wonderful series of classes on how to make money with a website.  Those who followed through with her methods ARE reaping the rewards.  While waiting for June to return, I was led to an excellent alternative just yesterday: Ed Dale's "30 Day Challenge".  Ed is an Aussie that has put together a FREE online course to lead you to making your first $1 on the Internet.  Why only a buck?  Because you will then have the framework in place (and the knowledge) to build your online empire.

Our SBI SIG members are supporting this effort.  They have formed a Google Group that you may join:
http://groups.google.com/group/tbcs-30dc named TBCS-30dc.  I sat in at the SBI SIG yesterday.  I was VERY impressed with how well the course is put together, and how useful it was to be able to discuss how it's going face-to-face at our Resource Center.

The SIG will be meeting for the next 3 Sundays (Aug 9 & 16).  I will be there to open up the Resource Center next Sunday, and Rick Hart will return from his vacation on the following Sunday.

Ed's course has homework every day for 31 days.  It started on Aug 1st... there is still time to catch up!  If you are interested, I would suggest that you register for it at:
www.thirtydaychallenge.com.  After you register (yes, it's free), click on the "Training" tab at the top of the page.  Ed has arranged each day's videos inside the folders there.  At the bottom of the page, are folders that contain a wealth of tools and support information.

Our Random Acts of Kindness day on Friday, September 11th

I will put up a wiki in the coming week to keep everyone better informed about what is going on.  For the moment, please set aside the day to come and join us.  Soon I'll post the movie and discussion schedule for the day (also on the wiki).

We are opening up our clinic on that day to NON-TBCS members.  If you know someone who needs help with their computer, please encourage them to register and then bring it in.  I need the following info from them:

======================= TEAR HERE =========================

You MUST register for the free Random Acts of Kindness Computer Clinic.  Please email the following info to the Club Secretary.

Yes, I would like to apply for the free Random Acts of Kindness Computer Clinic to be held at the Tampa Bay Computer Society on Friday, September 11th, 9am-2pm:

Name:

Phone:

Email:

Please give a brief description of your computer problem:

======================= TEAR HERE =========================

Please forward this info to your friends and acquaintances so that they can register.  Please do NOT bring in a computer if you haven't received a scheduled time from us.  We had some people show up at the last one that we had to turn away... embarrassing the members who sent them.

2600 Club meets this Friday night from 7-9pm
The topic this month is "Mesh Networks, Mesh Routers, and Cloud Computing".  While you can expect to see computer and Internet gurus at this event, novices are welcome also.  We generally adjourn to Capogna's Dugout afterwards for to get fed and watered.

We'll study Nanotechnology on Sep 4, and Artificial Intelligence on Oct 2.

Club leader, Chris Walters, plans on using a wiki to support our endeavors.  Please send an email to:
chris_walters50@hotmail.com.  Your email should include both an email address & phone number.  We're going to learn lots and have fun too.

-----

Our new Mac SIG will meet on August 17th, 7-9pm
Virginia Chilcote is going to lead the new SIG.  This group will meet on the 3rd Monday of each month from 7-9pm.  Let me be VERY clear here: we repair PC compatible computers ONLY.  We do not have the expertise to fix Macs at this time.  However, we DO want to provide interested Mac users with a place to network and share info.

2010 FACUG Technology Cruise/Conference next February!
The Florida Association of Computer User Groups (FACUG) is going to hold their next spring conference aboard the Norwegian Sky cruise ship.  We will sail from Miami on Friday, February 26, 2010.  We'll be calling on Nassau and Great Stirrup Cay, Bahamas, and we'll return to Miami on Monday, March 1, 2010.

The cruise prices are wonderful: $233.37 per passenger including taxes, fees, and gratuities (in the cheapest cabins), and the conference is only $50 for TBCS members and their spouses.  We'll have presentations, programs, vendors, cruise adventure, and fantastic food and activities.  Please go to:
www.facug.org for details and registration.

-----

WEDU: Thursday, August 6th, 7-10:30pm
We've got a full crew for this Thursday night.  Watch for TBCS club members during the membership breaks.
