2010 FACUG Technology Cruise/Conference
next February!
The Florida Association of Computer User Groups (FACUG)
is going to hold their next spring conference aboard the Norwegian Sky
cruise ship. We will sail from Miami on Friday, February 26, 2010.
We'll be calling on Nassau and Great Stirrup Cay, Bahamas, and we'll
return to Miami on Monday, March 1, 2010.
The cruise prices are wonderful: $233.37 per passenger
including taxes, fees, and gratuities (in the cheapest cabins), and the
conference is only $50 for TBCS members and their spouses. We'll
have presentations, programs, vendors, cruise adventure, and fantastic
food and activities.
There are only 99 of the cheapest cabins available
(although the other prices are excellent also). One of my
comparison shoppers tells me that FACUG negotiated a great price that
saves about $40 per person for the cruise. Plus TBCS will help
subsidize the event by reimbursing $25 for up to 20 of our members. This one is
filling fast so you want to make a decision soon. Go to:
www.facug.org for details and
registration.
How about if you want to go with a friend that doesn't
want to attend FACUG? Yes, only one person in a cabin needs to
register for FACUG to be legit, and their companion can get the cruise
price.
We're also going to look for a bus to take us from
Pinellas to Miami and back. More info as we firm up those plans.

WEDU: Thursday, August 6th, 7-10:30pm
WEDU has asked us to
help them raise funds again next month. This is an easy and fun job,
AND they feed us pizzas, chips, cookies, and sodas (just what a diabetic
crowd needs, eh?). Seriously, we have a great time, and it's a great
way to pay WEDU back for all of the good they bring to our community.
I have several volunteers, but still looking for more.
Please send an
email to the Club Secretary if
you'd like to join us. We'll arrange car pools for this junket.

2600 Club HAS a new leader: Chris
Walters!
We meet on the 1st Friday night of each month from 7-9pm
We are going to try a new approach here: each meeting we
will select a more advanced technology topic, and then we will try to
attract a speaker for it. Even if we don't get a speaker, we will
use the Internet as a resource to shed some light on our selections of
topics.
Here's our schedule:
 | Aug 7: Mesh Networks, Mesh Routers, & Cloud
Computing |
 | Sep 4: Nanotechnology |
 | Oct 2: Artificial Intelligence |
That'll get us started. We should have many more
topics by the time these are done.

Our new Mac SIG will meet on August
17th, 7-9pm
Virginia Chilcote is going to lead the new SIG.
This group will meet on the 3rd Monday of each month from 7-9pm. Let me be VERY clear here: we repair PC
compatible computers ONLY. We do not have the expertise to fix
Macs at this time. We do want to provide interested Mac users with
a place to network and share info.

Follow up on the Vietnam Vet story
A couple of months ago, I asked for some help for a
Vietnam veteran who was dying of cancer. So many people responded
to help that they actually had an overflow of donations. Lynn
Hawkins of St. Pete's H.O.T. (Helping Our Troops) made sure that Jim and
his wife Gale were able to move into a home
for his remaining time. The following message was sent to her
recently, and I wanted to share it with you. Thank you all for
being so responsive to someone in need.

Hi Lynn,
I have some sad news. Gale,
Jim's wife, planned a cookout the weekend of July 12th. At first
she was going to have a large get-together, but because Jim had been
very tired lately she decided to invite a smaller group of close friends
and family.
The morning of the cookout Jim was
taken by ambulance to the VA hospital where it was discovered that he
had pneumonia. Gale went ahead with the cookout as most of the
food had been prepared, and because she couldn't reach many of the
guests on such short notice to cancel.
We took pictures and everyone
signed a huge card. Several guests took turns going to the
hospital to visit Jim. However, he was too tired to visit with
most of them. I visited with him during the week and he was glad
that the cookout happened in his absence.
He was a very positive person and
was fighting hard. When he was first diagnosed in November he was
given 6 weeks to live. Jim passed away on Saturday, July 18, after
a long battle with cancer. His services will be held later this
week.
Gale wanted me to pass along her
gratitude for the kindness and assistance that has been provided to her
and Jim. Although they knew that he was terminal, the time they
had together in the house was precious. The house was made
comfortable by helpful hands and donations and Jim was happy to be able
to spend time there with family and friends.
He was especially happy to spend
time with his beloved dog, Lindsey, who was his constant companion and
best friend. While at home Jim was able to spend time with friends
and family who visited with him often.
He will be missed.
