We recycle ALL ink & toner cartridges!
NEW: ALL ink and toner cartridges can now be accepted.  Please bring your cartridges to the Resource Center or to the Cultural Center the night of the monthly meeting.

We also recycle your cell phones & chargers!
We give them to a group that puts them back in circulation as 911 help for seniors (through county services).  If you donate a cell phone, please remember to bring the accompanying charger.  Please put ALL components in a plastic bag to save confusion as to which parts go to which phone.

This month, Dale Atchison raves about Linux, Google Chrome, and Apple Safari, and rants against cell phones and pagers in the SIGs:

1) General Interest

Chuck Oppermann will be our guest speaker this week!
Chuck is one of our most popular speakers.  He worked for Microsoft for several years, and wrote a book on Active Directory (AD is a core piece of the Windows operating system).  His subject will be Windows 7.  Chuck not only brings a tremendous understanding of Microsoft software, he is great at explaining the technology to less sophisticated users.  Ask around our group, and you will find that his presentations are not to be missed.

Chuck will spend the initial 45 minutes of the evening on showing off the features of Win7.  After our break, he will return for a half-hour Q&A session.  Chuck, and several others, will be going to the nearby Denny's after the meeting to hang out for a bit.  You are all welcome to join us.

We are going to begin broadcasting the meeting via Microsoft Live Meeting at 6:45pm.  If you haven't used Live Meeting before, you will be prompted to download and install it when you click on the meeting link:
http://tinyurl.com/l99gnb

The link above will ONLY be active on:
Tuesday, July 21, 6:45 to 9:45pm
Meeting ID: NKCBZ6      (you may not need this)
Entry Code: T=,sb@j4J  (you may not need this)

A couple of people had the impression that they were about to be charged $59 for Live Meeting.  I assure you that Live Meeting is absolutely FREE to download, install, and use.  You can get the Microsoft Live Meeting Client in advance by downloading and installing the following file:
http://tinyurl.com/4gftmq

You will, of course, see a warning that installing an executable file can compromise your machine.  This is normal.  Go ahead and install.  Microsoft Live Meeting is not that large of an install, and it's well-behaved.  I trust it.  If you would like some more details on Live Meeting:

2010 FACUG Technology Cruise/Conference next February!
The Florida Association of Computer User Groups (FACUG) is going to hold their next spring conference aboard the Norwegian Sky cruise ship.  We will sail from Miami on Friday, February 26, 2010.  We'll be calling on Nassau and Great Stirrup Cay, Bahamas, and we'll return to Miami on Monday, March 1, 2010.

The cruise prices are wonderful: $233.37 per passenger including taxes, fees, and gratuities (in the cheapest cabins), and the conference is only $50 for TBCS members and their spouses.  We'll have presentations, programs, vendors, cruise adventure, and fantastic food and activities.

There are only 99 of the cheapest cabins available (although the other prices are excellent also).  One of my comparison shoppers tells me that FACUG negotiated a great price that saves about $170 per person for the cruise.  Plus TBCS will help subsidize the event by reimbursing $25 for up to 20 of our members.   This one is filling fast so you want to make a decision soon.  Go to:
www.facug.org for details and registration.

How about if you want to go with a friend that doesn't want to attend FACUG?  Yes, only one person in a cabin needs to register for FACUG to be legit, and their companion can get the cruise price.

We're also going to look for a bus to take us from Pinellas to Miami and back.  More info as we firm up those plans.

2600 Club HAS a new leader: Chris Walters!
We meet on the 1st Friday night of each month from 7-9pm

We are going to try a new approach here: each meeting we will select a more advanced technology topic, and then we will try to attract a speaker for it.  Even if we don't get a speaker, we will use the Internet as a resource to shed some light on our selections of topics.

Here's our schedule:

bulletAug 7: Mesh Networks, Mesh Routers, & Cloud Computing
bulletSep 4: Nanotechnology
bulletOct 2: Artificial Intelligence

That'll get us started.  We should have many more topics by the time these are done.

-----

Our new Mac SIG will meet on August 17th, 7-9pm
Virginia Chilcote is going to lead the new SIG.  This group will meet on the 3rd Monday of each month from 7-9pm.  Let me be VERY clear here: we repair PC compatible computers ONLY.  We do not have the expertise to fix Macs at this time.  We do want to provide interested Mac users with a place to network and share info.

-----

Doc's Café this Wednesday night at 7pm
We'll see some video on facets of how our minds work.  Followed, as always, by an energetic and entertaining discussion.  These are fun and informative folks.  You should come out and join us.

Wow!  There's just too much going on.  I will send out a supplement Bulletin later in the week.

The object of the group is to have hands on help for anyone using Block Builder and assistance in other areas such as uploading video, graphics, photos, and books.  You can come to get help, or to help someone else who has a problem.  It's easier to learn by hands-on than by reading or having some one explain the procedure in a classroom.  There are 11 computers available at the resource center for our use.
