"New Media" is coming to TBCS -
THIS SATURDAY!
The first meeting of our "New Media" SIG meets
this coming Saturday from 2-4pm. It's becoming very clear that our
society is embracing the new ways there are of connecting using the
social networking tools like Facebook, Twitter, LinkIn, etc. We
will start sharing sites and strategies to help both businesses and
individuals to use these tools advantageously.
We are inviting non-TBCS members to join us in this SIG
(Special Interest Group) for free. We are going to meet on both
the 2nd & 4th Saturday of each month. Normally, you must be a TBCS member to attend our SIGs,
however, this one is open to everyone. I am more interested in
creating a local resource pool, than I am in feathering our own nest.
Some of the topics we will be discussing: Facebook,
MySpace, Twitter, LinkedIn, MeetUp, Wikis, Blogs, Podcasts, etc.
These tools are being used to find jobs, increase
visibility of your business, and to increase both sales and donations.
I have enough material to keep us busy for the first
several meetings, but I'm already on the lookout for qualified speakers
in these area. I also may be able to attract some FREE help
to monitor and update our sites.
Here are the 1st two sessions:
June 13: Overview of New Media
Includes Pros & Cons of a variety of tools
June 27: Why a Wiki is often the answer
I am no longer asking people to sign up - we definitely
have enough interested for a successful class. Please join us on
Saturday at the Tampa Bay Computer Society (TBCS) on 1510 Barry Rd. in
Clearwater.

Careful of Tagged.com
Several TBCS members have already been caught by a
phishing message from Tagged.com. You receive an email from a
friend that says the friend has sent you "private" photos. You are
directed to sign up to receive them at a web site. If you get
suckered into doing this, you will probably receive volumes of spam for
your troubles. As a side benefit, the site sends messages
promoting itself to everyone in your Address Book or Contact Folders.
Isn't THAT special?
Here's an article that explains with a little more depth:

Job Info
I know of a lot of IT (Information Technology) people
looking for jobs at the moment. Plus I have requests from
employers from time-to-time, and I do my best to hook 'em up. I've
also been checking out some of the local job networking resources.
I plan on keeping our group informed about our local resources.
One of the best networking options locally is the
Transitioning Professionals of Tampa Bay. They meet every Thursday
morning from 8:45 to 11:15 am in Suite 100 at 3030 North Rocky Point
Drive West in Tampa. Their website is:
www.TPTampaBay.Net
Paul Ferreri and Rob Wolf offer their expertise and their
advice - and I have been very impressed with how job search savvy they
are. I suggest that you consider giving them a look at least once.
I'm sure you'll come away with some winning ideas.
