1) General Interest

2008 FACUG (Florida Association of Computer User Groups) Spring Conference
Date: Friday-Sunday, March 7, 8, & 9, 2008
Place: Zephyrhills High School, 6335 12th Street, Zephyrhills, FL 33542

Registration, hotel information, and more:
http://www.facug.org/ConferenceSpring/conference-s.asp

We already have 10 TBCS members going to this conference.  The Board has decided to pay the $60 registration fee for another 10 members to go, but you need to act fast.  Online registration for the event closes in 2 days (Feb 20).  Sorry for the short notice, but I'm moving kinda slow these days.  In truth, the on-site registration fee only goes up to $65 dollars on-site.  So a later registration will only cost YOU $5.

There are some great events this year.  Here's a list of presentations:
http://facug.org/ConferenceSpring/Presentations-S.asp

Here's a schedule of events:
http://facug.org/ConferenceSpring/schedule-S.asp

Your $60 includes several meals - with keynote speakers from the computer industry, a Vendors' Faire, and plenty of gifts..  Join us for 2 days and 1 night (Friday night is optional, but there will be gifts given away) to hang out with members of other computer user groups from around the state of Florida.  Over 140 people are registered as of now.  The limit is 200 people.

The $60 registration fee is good if postmarked by February 20th.  You have the option to use PayPal where you can register one or more attendees with a single PayPal transaction for the total amount.

Since this year's conference is being held in Zephyrhills, it's feasible to do a 1.5 hour commute.  If you prefer to get lodging, you should make your reservations ASAP.

While the our Board has voted to pay the $60 registration fee please send an email to the Club Secretary to let us know that you would like to take advantage of this generous offer.  While several of the roundtables deal with user group issues like increasing your membership or improving your newsletter design, there will be plenty of tech sessions of interest.

New SIG: FOSS (Free and Open Source Software)
4th Thursday of each month   1-3pm at the Resource Center
1st meeting on February 28th   Led by Stew Bottorf

I was trying to get a Linux SIG rejuvenated when my friend, Stew, had an excellent idea: Let's broaden the scope of a Linux SIG by including a variety of free software.  Mark your calendars for this one.  Stew is an excellent teacher.  This SIG will be both informative and fun.  Here's what Stew has to say about it:

The 2/28 FOSS SIG is a welcome/planning meeting. We'll explain the FOSS (free and open source software) concept where we can legally download high quality free software. I'll demo my computer showing off PCLinux2007 (in place of Windows), Open Office (a very good alternative to Microsoft Office) and show how to download and burn ISO installation CD/DVD. I have a nice $40 book entitled "Live Linux CD's" to award as a door prize.   Stew
