1) General Interest

Web 2.0 at the TBCS Resource Center TWICE this week!

I've become a "true believer" on the subject of something called Web 2.0.  Web 2.0 websites and technologies have the potential to alter our lives in dramatic ways.  I didn't even know the term a few weeks ago, but I've become convinced that we need to start understanding as much as we can about what our options are and how do we exercise them in the realm of the Internet today.

Two Web 2.0 sites will be the subjects of seminars to be given FREE at our Resource Center this week:

Squidoo by Sally Anne Dishong
Wed, Aug. 29th, 7-9pm
(more info below)

MySpace by Joel Mikesell
Fri, Aug 31st, 7-9

Both of these websites are "social networking" websites.  Both of these seminars will be taught online.  You can bring your laptop computer (it must be wireless-enabled), and build your Squidoo or MySpace page live as the lecturers show you how... what a cool way to learn!

No registration is required.  Everyone is invited.

Note: You say you don't know what all these new terms are?  What IS Web 2.0?  I encourage those who are interested in knowing more, please put the terms into your favorite search engine and you can learn a LOT in only 10 to 20 minutes.  (Then you to can be as confused as the rest of us are as to just what "Web 2.0" means - because that definition is proving itself very elusive <grin> ).

"How to use Squidoo to Promote Your Business, Hobby, or Non-Profit"
Free Seminar by TBCS member Sally Anne Dishong
August 29th, 7 - 9pm at the Resource Center.  No registration required.
See Sally's Lens:
http://www.squidoo.com/4PillarsofPersonalPromotion/

Squidoo is a free, Web 2.0 social network founded by marketing guru Seth Godin that lets you showcase your expertise in any area—business, personal, or charitable.  It’s kind of like a cross between a blog, a micro site, and a MySpace page.  The pages are called “lenses” and the folks who create them are called “lensmasters”.  Unlike its competitors, Squidoo welcomes marketers, promoters, and fund-raisers.  It’s fast, fun, and easy to create a lens about your passion.  And you can link in blogs, videos, and online stores to raise money for yourself or your favorite charity.  If you’re looking for a way to self-publish on the Web without having to cough up the time and money for your own web site, this is a great option.

In this complimentary 2-hour introductory workshop you’ll learn the basics of Squidoo and create your first lens.  You, too, can be famous!  If you want to actually create your lens in class, you’ll need your wireless laptop, a one-page bio text document, a digital photograph suitable for publicity, and a one-page article about your passion.

June Hollister's Online Business Course Update

There are a few changes coming with June's course.  She had announced at the last meeting that she was not going to continue with the Marketing portion as originally planned, but that she was going to repeat her Basic Online curriculum again.

However, she needs a bit of a breather in order to incorporate several changes.  We are going to continue on with the advanced course after all.  One key difference is that Doc will take a more active role this time around.

So, June's Online Marketing course will begin on Friday night, September 14th, at 7pm.  We'll both see you then.

3) SIG Stuff

Our SIGs (Special Interest Groups) all meet at our Resource Center
(map: http://www.tampa-bay.org/maps.htm).
All of our SIGs are free to our members.

SIGs are a great place to get more personalized attention, and get your questions answered. The following SIGs will meet this week:

Monday, August 27, 7-9pm
Publishing Software SIG. Led by Stacy Lloyd

I have had a request to review tab usage inTypography, Chapter 5 of the InDesign Classroom in a Book.  I also have a request for review of the use of layers in InDesign.  Layers is very valuable in InDesign, however, there is a difference between their use in InDesign and in Photoshop.  We will cover both items at the meeting.
Stacy
