1) National Do Not Call Registry     http://donotcall.gov/

Our government started the National Do Not Call Registry this week.  Once you register your phone number(s) with them, many telemarketers will be forbidden to place calls to the numbers you register.

Notice that I say "many" instead of "all".  Certain industries get an exemption and may still call: long-distance phone companies, airlines, banks & credit unions, and "some" insurance companies.  You may still receive calls from political organizations, charities, telephone surveyors or companies with which you have an existing business relationship.

The FCC has initiated a rulemaking proceeding that would extend the Registry to many of the businesses that are exempt from the current rules.  I know I keep looking for the day that ALL of these calls are banned.

Registration is a piece of cake.  You can enter up to 3 phone numbers.  You MUST enter your email address.  The verification process includes sending you an email with a link you must go to in order to complete the process.  You MUST click on the link they send you within 72 hours in order to complete the process.

Telemarketers will be required to use the database as of October 1st of this year.  Since it takes roughly 3 months for your phone number to actually get blocked, you might want to sign up as soon as possible.
